In less than 48 hours we will be opening the doors of the J. Wilkes Wines Tasting Room and Education Center in Los Olivos, CA.  My travels recently have taken me to Washington DC for a State Department Luncheon for 5 Nordic Prime Ministers and Presidents, Oklahoma, Texas, all over California, Nevada and Arizona.  And that’s just the last month!

I mention my travels because they have distracted me slightly from the planning and excitement of the tasting room ‘soft opening’ this week.  Fortunately our awesome team of Dave, Pati, Julie, Marshall, Amy and all the new hires (staff) have put up much of the furniture and educational maps, kiosks, flat panels, wine racks, etc that will make us functional when we open.  But I’ve been thinking about other details.

  • Honest and passionate hospitality for all guests, including children and well-behaved pets.
  • Meaningful and fun educational experience to get folks understanding wine as a whole, and Santa Barbara/Paso Robles AVA’s that e use in our wines.
  • Casual but polished environment in which to learn and evaluate J. Wilkes wines.
  • A place where guests want to share their experiences with social media, free wifi, and a comfortable place from which to speak to the world.

In the modern world there are always digital details that are easy to forget.  Today I made sure that the tasting room will show up on Facebook and Instagram as a ‘location’–otherwise does it really exist?  I also just now finished profiles for the Yelp and Trip Advisor platforms so folks can rate our service and wines honestly–and I look forward to earning 5-star ratings from as many folks as we can host with perfected hospitality.

I also loved the idea by Nicholas and Marshall Miller that we have a separate ‘office’ in which wine club members and special guests can sit and have a conversation with the winemaker…sort of like ‘office hours’ with a professor.

My idea for the ‘rules’ for the office hours are:  if you want to talk about wine we can talk in the tasting room, but if you want to talk about anything but wine (with glass in hand) we can adjourn to the ‘Salon’ or my office.

This brings up my question for the week, an open-ended question that has no right or wrong answer:

Agree or disagree?  ‘Great wine should lead to a conversation about everything except itself.’
